Thunderbolt 5, expected in 2024 and based on the USB4 v2 specification, offers significantly higher performance than its predecessors with a base speed range between 80 Gbps (as compared to Thunderbolt 3 and 4’s 40 Gbps ceiling) up to 120 Gbps with new bandwidth boosting technology, that is capable of supporting dual monitors at 6k resolutions, and 140/240 watt charging.
While it likely won’t keep the speed and bandwidth crown for too long (hardware and software have a funny way of getting more powerful and requiring more resources), users can expect a significant performance boost when accessories and devices supporting the standard are released in 2024.
