Software company Autodesk announced that they were moving core components of RV to an open-source model.
RV, a high-performance image viewer and playback system was acquired by AutoDesk in 2015. It has been updated regularly since its acquisition and its most recent release, RV 2022.3 requires an active ShotGrid subscription for $45/month.
The move is part of the Academy Software Foundation’s Open Review initiative, with stakeholders that include Autodesk, Sony, and DNEG that aims to create an open-source framework for VFX development.
While Autodesk has announced that the open-source shift only applies to “core components” of RV, it has yet to provide a timeline.
