Western Digital has announced the release of a new line of hard drives featuring massive storage capacities of up to 26 terabytes (TB).
The hard drives feature a new technology called shingled magnetic recording (SMR) that increases the density of data stored on a hard disk platter. According to a press release from Western Digital, the new drives offer “18% more capacity… to take advantage of the benefits of SMR.”
The increased capacity of these drives come at the expense of performance, although Western Digital has not released exact numbers as to how much they’re affected.
While the new drives are specifically targeting the cloud server market, the technology is expected to spread to local and consumer-facing devices as other drive manufacturers catch up to Western Digital’s lead.
