Google has announced that it will automatically enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for users.
In a blog released May 6 (which coincided with World Password Day), the internet giant announced the move.
“You may not realize it, but passwords are the single biggest threat to your online security – they’re easy to steal, they’re hard to remember, and managing them is tedious,” stated the announcement. “One of the best ways to protect your account from a breached or bad password is by having a second form of verification in place – another way for your account to confirm it is really you logging in.”
Two- or multi-factor authentication isn’t foolproof, but adds an effective extra hurdle for hackers or threat actors seeking to compromise an account.
Google hasn’t released an official timeline, simply saying that it would implement the change “soon.”
While the change will most likely enhance the security of user accounts, some users may experience difficulties when attempting to log into their accounts. Nodal suggests Google account holders implement the 2FA protocol in advance to avoid any potential disruption.
