G Suite Transitions to Google Workspace

Google has announced that it is rebranding its popular G Suite line of office applications as Google Workspace.

The company’s rationale for the transition is primarily that it is offering greater integration amongst its connected apps, including Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Meet, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, including simplifying shared guest access and increasing collaboration tools. Google will also be introducing integrations with its Chromecast and Nest Smart Displays hardware.

One of the larger changes that may work to the detriment of existing G Suite users is that it will jettison the unlimited Drive storage and numbers of users currently offered to Business accounts: Google Workspace will offer two tiers for business service, and provide 2TB and 5TB of storage per user with a maximum of 300 users for both.

Google justified this apparent downgrade in service by explaining that “a relatively small number of organizations in a few specific industries actually realize the full benefit of unlimited storage.”

Existing G Suite customers can still retain their data storage plan, but any new accounts will be stuck with the new limitations introduced to Workspace.

Google has announced that it will be reaching out to existing G Suite administrators informing them of the changes, and detailing what, if anything is needed during the adjustment.
