Great news for Mac-based Fusion and DaVinci Resolve users who are looking for a little extra processing power: developer Blackmagic has officially released their own external GPU (eGPU) solution for Macs. Mac systems - particularly the iMac and MacBook platforms - have long been notoriously difficult to upgrade, so Blackmagic’s newest offering offers a dedicated solution to improving performance for GPU-intensive applications.
The unit boasts an built-in AMD Radeon Pro 580 graphics card and connects to the host machine via Thunderbolt 3. A second Thunderbolt 3 port is available to support a secondary display, and the device also sports an HDMI 2.0 port and 4 USB 3.1 ports. The aluminum chassis is freestanding and has been designed to offer superior performance while even running quieter than the fans on the MacBook Pro.
The Blackmagic eGPU retails for $699 exclusively through the Apple website.
