Samsung Pro SSD Faces Concerns About Reliability Issues

Samsung’s reputation for quality SSDs has taken a hit due to reported issues with their 980 and 990 Pro Models.

A recent blog post released by Puget Systems, a longtime proponent of Samsung hard drives stated that they had received a “surprising number of reports” of hardware failures. The most commonly reported glitch was having the drives locked into read-only mode, which renders affected drives unusable.

Samsung has since traced the issue back to an outdated firmware version shipped with many of their drives, specifically on their 980 Pro models.

Although Samsung has released a firmware update to address these issues, the process may be more complicated for non-technical users who are used to the stability and ease of use offered by the drives. Even worse, several users have reported that the firmware update itself is leading to more issues and in some cases, hardware failure.

It remains to be seen what long-term impact, if any, this will have for the tech giant, but it has generated negative publicity from many well-known publications and social media users.
