Drobo Folds, Declares Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

Drobo, the one-time makers of “storage robot”-style hardware and backup has officially shuttered. While the company had stopped selling its hardware, it has announced that its product support would be transitioning to “a self-service model” as it enters into Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation.

The news doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise; Drobo and its parent company StorCentric have struggled the last few years, citing Covid-19 and related supply chain issues as early as 2021. StorCentric announced it was filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2022, but failed to find a buyer for the companies.

Drobo originally garnered attention in 2005 with its storage devices that allowed for swapping drives of multiple sizes relatively easily without the need for migration.

While Drobo’s product line and status as a company appear to be dead in the water, it’s possible that it could find new life as part of the liquidation process.
