Apple has announced the upcoming release of a new line of MacBook Pros with their new line of M2 Pro, M2 Max chips.
The M2 Pro supports up to 12-core CPUs, up to 19-core GPUs, up to 32GB of unified memory and 200GB/S memory bandwidth, and starts at $1,999. The M2 Max starts at $3099 and boasts a 12-core CPU with an up to 28-core GPU, as much as 96GB unified memory and 400GB/S, and is referred to by Apple in their typically breathless tone as being “the most powerful and efficient chip ever in a pro laptop.” This claim has yet to be externally confirmed, but represents a major increase in power and speed over previous models.
All of the new laptops will also include 16-core Neural Engines, 14 inch Liquid Retina XDR displays, as well as Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port and SDXC card slot, headphone jacks and Magic Keyboards with Touch ID.
In addition to the increased speed and power, Apple claims that the 16” model offers the “longest battery life ever in a Mac,” with a maximum of 22 hours of video playback. Keeping in mind the company’s tendency toward superlatives in their product announcements, the claim was seemingly verified by at least one news outlet.
The M2-based MacBook Pros will be on 14” and 16” models and are currently available to ship and to buy at Apple Stores.
