Apple Officially Pulls the Plug on macOS Server

It was a good run, but the macOS Server app is officially dead.

Apple announced that it was discontinuing the network management app last month.

MacOS Server originally began as a server-centric operating system, and its features and underlying kernel provided the foundation for Mac OS X and its subsequent consumer versions.

Apple scaled down and ultimately discontinued its line of servers and folded the primary functionality offered in Mac OS X Server into a separate app and began to integrate several key features into macOS.

Server will still be available for purchase, but will not receive security patches or added features.

“The most popular server features—Caching Server, File Sharing Server, and Time Machine Server are bundled with every installation of macOS High Sierra and later, so that even more customers have access to these essential services at no extra cost,” Apple announced in its press release, which also contained links guiding customers to other MDM (mobile device management) solutions.
