Google has announced its intent to complete its coming phase-out of G Suite as of January 31, 2022.
The move, originally announced back in October 2020, promises to add greater integration within its stable of apps, simplify guest sharing and integrate with its internet-connected devices. It will also do away with its once-generous unlimited storage and users for Business accounts in favor of 2TB and 5TB tiers per user storage with a maximum of 300 users. However, unlimited storage is still available at the Enterprise level.
While holdouts of the original G Suite with Annual and Fixed Term plans can remain on their original subscriptions, Google has made it clear that they expect every current user to transition to workspace. What this means for existing G Suite customers with long term subscriptions is unclear; the company may simply force them as of the 1/31/22, or they may stick to their previous commitment to let existing G Suite customers hang on until their subscriptions expire.
“All G Suite subscriptions must transition to Google Workspace. If you have an active Annual/Fixed-Term plan, your subscription will remain unchanged until it's time to renew. We recommend you transition as soon as possible to benefit from Google Workspace functionality,” the company announced.
In short: If your G Suite subscription is nearing its renewal or expiration date, you’ll be switched over to Workspace whether you want to or not, so it’s a good idea to start planning for it.
