If your business uses Intel-based Mac computers, planned obsolescence isn’t the only threat you’re facing. A new malware designed to exfiltrate data called “MetaStealer” has been spotted targeting the older model devices.
The malware typically disguises itself with a PDF icon (despite being an app) accompanied by a business-centric filename such as “Advertising terms of reference” or “ AdobeOfficialBriefDescription” according to SentinelOne, a cybersecurity company.
Once deployed to a victim’s device, MetaStealer attempts to transfer sensitive information, including passwords and app data through the macOS password manager Keychain.
Newer models of Apple computers running on their proprietary Silicon hardware are safe for the time being.
