A set of software updates released by Microsoft for Windows 10 and 11 are reportedly breaking Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) VPN connections.
In the wake of Microsoft’s January 2022 Patch Tuesday, the Windows 10 KB5009543 and Windows 11 KB5009566 updates are apparently leaving users unable to connect to L2TP VPN via Windows’s native VPN client.
The updates apparently only affect those using the Windows VPN client; other programs are able to connect as per usual.
While it’s possible to uninstall the patches, doing so will leave Windows computers open to several vulnerabilities fixed by the update.
There is currently no known fix or workaround for the problem.
