Red Hat has made good on its promise to discontinue its CentOS Linux distribution. As of December 31, 2020, the open-source operating system giant formally pulled the plug on its product, encouraging users to migrate to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
This has caused a fair amount of uproar with many CentOS users who were expecting, and in many cases depending on version 8 of CentOS to be available until 2029.
Adding to the user confusion is Red Hat’s apparent migration from CentOS to CentOS stream, “as a continuously delivered platform that becomes the next minor version of RHEL,” leading many CentOS users to wonder what Red Hat’s transition means for them in practical terms.
Linux users of AutoDesk Flame’s family of products are currently in a state of limbo, as Autodesk’s website currently lists CentOS as its preferred distribution.
